In Myanmar Outpost, a Fading Orwellian Link
This is the house where George Orwell wrote Burmese Days, a former colonial outpost on the banks of the Irrawaddy River.
The book is a scathing report on the imperious attitudes of the brutish British characters who swilled too much gin and whiskey at a whites-only club, and wilted in the vaporous heat. A train that crawled through the jungle from Mandalay provided a lifeline to the outside world.
Where is this house you say? I’ve added it to my list of place to visit.
