I now know exactly which tree you are talking about - the huge cedar in the garden of the house that John Dalby used to live in. What a shame. Something like this is an ecosystem all in itself - like the Banyans here.
There used to be one in the woods on the other side of the lane from my parents house. It came down in the storms about ten years ago, just missing the house and where my mother used to sleep.
We should plant some more of these - I think they were probably high fashion in Edwardian times when people had properly landscaped gardens. We should restart this trend. I think one would look absolutely majestic in the middle of your ample lawn. Shall we start there???
